What is Insulin Resistance!

Reader

It is a condition where our cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin. Insulin helps move glucose (sugar) into the cell for energy or to store fat. When the cells resist insulin’s signal:

  • The body requires more insulin to keep blood sugars normal
  • The pancreas has to produce more insulin to keep up
  • The body stores more and more fat to try to keep blood sugar normal
  • Eventually leading to the pancreas inability to keep up and/or no more fat stores

This can lead to:

  • Pre-Diabetes/Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormally high Triglycerides
  • Increased risk of heart disease
  • Increased risk of Stroke

This is just the beginning of what insulin resistance leads to in the body.

Signs may include:

  • Weight gain especially around the belly
  • Cravings especially for carbs
  • Fatigue
  • Dark patches of skin (acanthosis nigricans)
